Strategic Spray Foam Insulation

Home insulation is an excellent insulator that fills cracks and crevices to create a draft-free, comfortable living space. It also helps reduce utility costs as it prevents the heating and cooling system from working so hard to maintain a consistent temperature. It is available in a range of R-values to suit individual design and energy efficiency goals. It can be used in new or existing structures and comes in both closed- and open-cell varieties.

Closed-cell spray foam offers a high R-value and moisture resistance, as well as adding structural strength to walls and roofs. It is also highly adhesive, which means that it holds the substrates to which it is applied (e.g. drywall) in place and can help keep the structure together during storms or high winds. In fact, according to a Factory Mutual test quoted by America’s Plastic Makers, a roof insulated with closed-cell foam held up against 990 psf of wind uplift pull with a tensile strength of 25 psi (172.4 kPa).

Kitchens often have very low levels of insulation, meaning that they are exposed to extreme differences in temperatures and can be prone to condensation buildup. Spray foam insulation is moisture-resistant, and it can provide an added layer of protection against mold and mildew.

It is important that any spray foam insulation project be properly ventilated after application to allow any fumes to dissipate. Make sure to open windows and run fans for at least 24 hours after the foam has fully expanded and cured.
